Everybody’s favourite pirate is back for the forth instalment of “Pirates of the Caribbean” and it’s costing the producers $56 million just to pay the star. This is to be the highest amount of money paid to an actor in all-time. Prior to Depp, Tom Hanks held the record for receiving $51 million for starring in “The Da Vinci Code.”
It is reported that Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will not be appearing in the new Pirates film, which is very interesting to see how this will unravel. I understand that they’re paying Depp such a high sallary, but does that mean they have to cut out other actors just to make this movie. What’s next, are they going to start cutting out cinematographers and other crew members out because of the budget dilemma? Depp is a great actor and Pirates wouldn’t be the same without him, but Jesus, do they really have to pay the man such an insane amount to stand in front of a camera for a few months? Also, it is interesting to see how well this movie will do in the box office now that U.S is in a recession and many people are choosing to stay home rather than go out and spend any spare cash on entertainment.
Johnny Depp has another five or so movies in pre-production and is rumored to be in at least another three films. I’m sure his good buddy Tim Burton isn’t laying out anything close to $50 million for Depp to star in the remake of “Alice in Wonderland.” Frankly, the only movie I really want Depp to star in at this point, before he gets too old, is in “The Rum Diary,” an auto-biographical portrayal of Depp’s good late friend Hunter S. Thompson. The film is about Hunter’s life as a journalist in San Juan, and even though there were rumors about this film for about a year now, it keeps being postponed for Depp to complete other roles.
We all saw how recession-proof Vegas was, now it’s time to see how Hollywood will fight the recession. I really want to see how well the movie and music industry will do against the recession. Well, if we see actors like Depp receiving record salaries at a time America is in turmoil, we should not see Hollywood suffering too much. What do you think?

That is an insane amount for being an actor. If the demands for movie drops, I guess the film industry will be affected as well.
Thanks for the share.

The Rum Diary needs to be made. Depp is rich enough. He needs to get real and bring Hunter S. back into peoples’ minds, especially at a time like we’re in right now.
Ditto!! I agree The Rum Diary needs to be made!! It’s one of my top 10 books of all time. I just hope they do the book justice and not mess it up by following half of the original plot.
Honestly Johnny Depp didn’t make “Pirates of the Caribbean”…Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley made the movie. It just wont be the same without them. “sigh”
Rum Diary is such a simple yet complex book that it’ll be easy for the director to screw up, you’re right Legan. But then again let’s just hope it gets made for now. I rather not see it get made then get butchered. I just wish the book had more publicity than it does, but on the otherhand screw the mainstream garbage.
